In referencing Ivesmail’s original research, the primary source will be the incomplete essay Ivesmail (unsuccessfully) submitted to the Gravesham Parish Newsletter in 1999, which is by far the most comprehensive text Ivesmail provided as a guide to the work of Naomi Jelish (text | pdf (3.66 MB)). Where Ivesmail is quoted, this essay will undoubtedly be the source (the essay is included in the exhibition). For continuity’s sake, this text will use the taxonomy developed by Ivesmail, so Extraneous Drawings (ED), School Sketchbooks (SSB) and the Private Sketchbook (PS) will all be referenced as Ivesmail originally catalogued the work.
Thanks are offered primarily to Olive and Jim Nash whose unearthing of eighteen drawings and a new sketchbook has enabled a fresh insight into an already complex web of connections. Gratitude is also extended to Mrs. Genevieve Demaio for her kind contribution of two drawings that belonged to her sister, Naomi’s Art teacher Ms. Anita Demaio, and to the variety of sources that have provided the materials relating to John Ivesmail’s research.
